The rose is a deciduous shrub and known as the "queen of flowers"; it has given its name to the entire plant genus.
The Damask rose originates from the Persian region and is said to have been brought to Europe by the Crusaders.
The typical form of Rosa damascena is somewhat climbing, with softly drooping pink flowers.
The variety currently cultivated for essential oil in Turkey, Morocco, Bulgaria, India, Persia, or Russia is called Rosa damascena trigintipetala.
