Extensor tendon injuries to the distal phalanges of the fingers are often treated conservatively with the Stack splint. The principle of the Stack splint is based on hyperextension of the injured finger end phalanx. It is attached with plaster strips or Velcro tape to ensure a secure fit. It consists of a thermoplastic acrylic resin that is perforated several times to improve wearability and thus counteract skin maceration. This material can be remoulded over a flame (Bunsen burner, etc.) and also in hot water. The cap over the phalanx media can be fixed in place with a Velcro strip or plaster. Despite the many improvements to these splints, it is advisable to cover the finger to be treated with at least a tubular bandage. It is even better to line the splint with a thin padding material to prevent maceration.
